Step into our story at The Eliza Jane, an impeccably-styled boutique hotel in Downtown New Orleans at the crossroads of the French Quarter, Central Business District, and Arts District. Like the Big Easy itself, our little slice of New Orleans embodies the city’s tireless creativity and pays homage to its rich tradition of storytelling.
A Novel Transformation
Design Vision
New York-based interior design firm Stonehill Taylor developed the interior design of The Eliza Jane’s guestrooms and public spaces, including our French brasserie, Couvant. The vision? To create the perfect New Orleans getaway, a blend of old and new translated into design details that pay homage to the building’s past in a sophisticated yet playful way.
Old Warehouses
The Eliza Jane occupies a collection of ten historic warehouses, once belonging to The Daily Picayune newspaper, Peychaud Bitters Factory, Gulf Baking Soda Company, Peter Cartridge Shop, and more. Inspired by the beauty of each warehouse, the design team intended to reference each of its original occupants, but it was one standout tenant — The Daily Picayune’s owner Eliza Jane Nicholson — who has evolved into the namesake of the hotel.
Lobby
Upon arrival, you’ll be greeted by a lobby with evergreen paneled walls and a hex-tiled floor. A fluted glass partition separates a lounge from the main public space in a vaulted-ceiling atrium. A skylight and lush greenery soften the exposed brick and plaster walls, creating a greenhouse-like ambiance. The marble-topped bar is lined by rich green, crocodile-embossed leather stools. The atrium bar features jewel-toned velvet seating, complemented by antique oriental rugs and brass lamps that complete the space.
Couvant
Couvant is located in the original Peychaud Cocktail Bitters factory, revealed by brick walls behind the bar and in private rooms. The front lounge has a black-and-white tiled floor with bar-style seating by historic windows facing Magazine Street. The main dining area features concrete flooring, an oak bar made from repurposed newel posts, saddle brown leather banquettes, and French-style bistro seating. The warm smell of freshly baked gougères drifts through the restaurant from our chef’s counter in the heart of the dining room.
Inspired by the 19th-century local poet-turned-publisher Eliza Jane Nicholson, our name honors our legacy. Every detail of our New Orleans boutique hotel pays homage to Nicholson, America’s first woman publisher of a major metropolitan paper, who led The Daily Picayune in the late 1800s.
After inheriting the heavily indebted newspaper following her husband’s death in 1876, Nicholson introduced a series of innovations like society pages and family columns. By the 1890s, her efforts helped the newspaper triple its circulation.
Gather in the Courtyard
Step into the Courtyard, a lush, private oasis at the very heart of the hotel. With original exposed brick walls, black-and-white cement tiles, and a sensual, Venus-inspired fountain by local artist Brent Barnidge, the open-air courtyard is a perfect space for mingling with friends or hosting a private event. Retreat beneath the custom pergola, gas lantern, and overgrown trellises, and enjoy a balmy New Orleans night.
